Energy efficiency in high-performance buildings including labs, clean rooms and data centers is no longer an option. The simple fact is that virtually all facilities with critical thermal targets are overcooling their environments to ensure adequate operational guard bands. And most of these facilities are overcooling by millions of dollars, because they do not have the operational granularity to safely reduce the guard band and more tightly maintain their thermal target.
With much of the global economy dependent upon products made in or services provided through these facilities, attention on improving their energy efficiency and services is crucial. Energy efficiency improvements not only contribute directly to a company’s bottom line, they also provide improved product and service quality, competitive advantage and increased profitability.
However in order to improve the energy efficiency in these environments, operators need to be able to measure the operating conditions in real-time, and be able to aggregate the data for analysis of efficiency improvements in a cost effective way. These case studies are part of the Leadership Group's Green IT project, which includes approximately 30 Silicon Valley end users and governmental organizations such as the Lawrence Berkeley National Labs, the California Energy Commission, San Francisco Bay Area universities, local power utilities and technology corporations.
