Environmental Monitoring and Data Center Optimization Platform

SynapSense Environmental Monitoring provides real-time visibility, enhanced monitoring capability with alerts and air mixing metrics which lead to significant energy savings. Data center managers utilize this 2009 Global Cleantech award winning solution to assess current operating conditions, identify opportunities and quantify efficiency improvements. It is a tool for continuous data center power and cooling optimization. It consists of three basic components: the SynapSense wireless network, console application, and a browser-based user interface. This system employs a non-intrusive, low-power wireless mesh network which does not utilize IP addresses for enhanced security.

SynapSense LiveImaging Environmental Monitoring

SynapSense Environmental Monitoring provides real-time PUE and air mixing metrics to continuously measure energy efficiency improvements. LiveImaging™ maps and movies depict actual changes in thermals, plenum pressure and relative humidity. The enhanced monitoring and powerful data analysis capabilities provided in SynapSoft™ 6.0 enable data center operators to continuously optimize power and cooling, with an incomparable ability to measure and track the impact of improvements.

• SynapSoft 6.0 enables SynapSense Active Control™ version 1.0 to continuously align cooling capacity with changes in IT load, resulting in savings of up to 50% of cooling energy.

• LiveImaging™ generates thermal maps and movies of temperature, humidity and plenum pressure across the entire data center.

• Real-time PUE and airflow efficiency metrics enable quantifiable and continuous optimization of data center power and cooling.

• Custom metrics provide access to powerful calculations on measured data to enhance analysis of data center energy efficiency.

• Comprehensive power metering measures the cooling infrastructure and overall IT load.

• Branch Circuit Monitoring enables circuit-level monitoring to capture power by rack for IT load balancing and capacity management.

• BMS integration (or integration with other third party equipment) enabled via SNMP, Modbus and BACnet protocols.

Data Center Efficiency Metrics

CRAH cooling efficiency metrics comprehend how effectively cooling resources are being employed.  Our console will calculate and display the following metrics, which have been developed in conjunction with the DOE:

Rack Cooling Index (RCI)TM RCIHITM and RCILOTM
Measure of the cooling effectiveness of IT equipment racks to ASHRAE levels

Rack Moisture Index Hi/Lo
Measure of the moisture content of cooling air to IT equipment racks to ASHRAE levels

 

Recirculation Air Ratio (RA)

Measure of the temperature rise in the cold aisle from re-circulating hot discharge air

 

Bypass Air Ratio (BPA) 
Measure of the temperature decrease in the cold aisle from re-circulation hot discharge air

 

Air Loss Ratio (ALR) 
Measure of the CRAC/CRAH airflow wasted due to recirculation and by-pass air
