SynapSense™ Exceeds 5 Billion Sensor Readings in World’s Leading Data Centers

Monitoring Capabilities Are Top 2010 Budget Priority for Leading Enterprises

FOLSOM, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Signaling that its wireless instrumentation solutions have become a best practice for data center operators, SynapSense™ Corporation today announced its industry-leading Data Center Monitoring and Energy Management solution has sensed more than 5 billion data points in the world’s leading data centers.

With customers in a vast range of industries including finance, technology, healthcare, defense, aerospace and utilities, SynapSense solutions have provided data center operators with unprecedented levels of visibility, resiliency and energy optimization in more than 25 different vertical market segments.

In this challenging economic environment, data center operators must stay within their current footprint, despite increasing load requirements. The SynapSense Data Center Monitoring and Energy Management solution is being utilized as a real-time tool to improve air flow, increase temperatures, shut down excess air handling units and optimize power and real estate.

“SynapSense provides a continuous assessment of data center operating conditions enabling optimization of power, infrastructure and real estate footprint,” said SynapSense Chief Executive Officer Peter Van Deventer. “SynapSense is experiencing tremendous momentum in a wide variety of industries because we have developed the best optimization tool to balance the sub floor, optimize air flow, improve air handler utilization and increase chilled water temperatures.”

Additionally, monitoring capabilities provided by SynapSense solutions are a major budget priority for leading data center operators in 2010 to enhance their return on investment and provide energy efficiency savings. SynapSense customers, such as DFW Consulting and RagingWire Enterprise Solutions, Inc., have experienced firsthand the benefits of SynapSense solutions.

“The ability to simultaneously see the temperatures graphically, in real-time and throughout the room (relational response), makes the proposition of fine-tuning the raised floor to eliminate wasted cold air and eliminate hot spots nothing short of phenomenal,” said Dennis Kniery, CFM, Manager Energy Programs, DFW Consulting, after deploying SynapSense technology to optimize a 65,000 square foot data center in the central United States.

According to James Kennedy, Director of Facilities at RagingWire, SynapSense has helped Raging Wire save more than $300,000 per year.

“By using SynapSense solutions and active static pressure monitoring, we were able to better seal our data floor and increase pressures 30 percent to an average of almost double what was required by just having the data and seeing the efficiency loss,” said Kennedy.

Kennedy explained that Raging Wire’s current project for controls modifications of its computer room air conditioning (CRAC)—including controlling supply air temperatures and dynamic static pressure control with SynapSense and variable frequency drives—will conservatively save more than $2,000 per CRAH with a 20 percent reduction in static pressure. With more than 150 CRACs, this equates to more than $300,000 per year in energy savings, as well as providing better operational response and wear on the machines, according to Kennedy.

Furthermore, SynapSense is working with several large customers to implement real-time DCiE (Data Center Infrastructure Efficiency) and PUE (Power Utilization Effectiveness) in their data centers using customized integration services. These projects employ power metering using SynapSense wireless sensors and industry-standard power meters from Square D, together with integration of existing data points from the building management system.

SynapSense Data Center Monitoring and Energy Management solutions have been deployed in data centers operated by Fortune 500 companies from Wall Street to Silicon Valley. SynapSense has recently been recognized as a Gold Medal winner in the SearchDataCenter.com 2009 Product of the Year Awards and part of the Global Clean Tech 100 by the UK Guardian and Clean Tech groups. Additionally, BusinessWeek and market researcher, YouNoodle, named the company one of the top 50 technology startups readers should follow.
