Silicon Valley Leadership Group Launches First Annual Data Center Energy Summit 2008

Full-Day Symposium Will Feature Real 'Green Computing' Case Studies From 11 Major Silicon Valley Organizations

SAN JOSE, Calif., June 16 /PRNewswire/ -- The Silicon Valley LeadershipGroup today announced their first Data Center Energy Summit 2008, an all-daysymposium dedicated to sustainable data center design, energy efficientengineering and operational practices for green computing.

'Our data center efficiency initiative saves both energy and money.Silicon Valley is proving once again that green is gold,' said Carl Guardino, president and CEO of the Silicon Valley Leadership Group.

The event will take place on Thursday, June 26, 2008, at the campus of SunMicrosystems in Santa Clara, Calif., and includes the following:

  • The results of 11 'green computing' initiatives presented by data center operators from organizations such as Digital Realty Trust, Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, NetApp, Oracle, Sun Microsystems, Symantec, Synopsys, the U.S. Postal Service and Yahoo! These data center operators were supported by technology partners such as APC, Cassatt, IBM, Liebert, Modius, Power Assure, PowerSmiths, SprayCool, Rittal and SynapSense, which provided their energy efficient IT and data center infrastructure technologies for several of the case studies and demonstration projects.
  • An analysis by Accenture, which compares the actual measurable results of the above case studies to the various energy saving scenarios developed by Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) experts in 2007
  • An interactive panel discussion with Teri Takai, chief information officer (CIO) for the State of California and with CIOs from several leading Silicon Valley companies including Bob Worrall, Sun Microsystems, David Thompson, Symantec and Tayloe Stansbury, VMware
  • An evening tour and reception at one of the Silicon Valley's premier data centers

'Accenture is honored to be given the responsibility by the LeadershipGroup and Berkeley Labs to author the consolidated report, whose key findingsare significant since they quantify the real savings enterprises can achieveby using a set of green computing technologies. We expect the report toelevate the discussion to the next level by showing what happens when the bestset of solutions of the 11 technologies studied are combined,' said TeresaTung, senior researcher and Ph. D., Accenture Technology Labs. 'And we're veryhopeful these findings hold the potential to influence green regulation andcertification currently taking shape.'

Data Center Energy Summit 2008 is a Silicon Valley Leadership Group eventin partnership with Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory. 'These types ofcase studies and demonstration projects are exactly what our primary researchsponsors are trying to encourage -- which is the public and private sectorworking together collaboratively,' said Bill Tschudi, of Lawrence BerkeleyNational Laboratory. 'Going forward, the CEC is planning to continue toparticipate in the Data Center Demonstration Project and, through LBNL, it islooking forward to making this one of the premier forums for demonstrating newenergy efficient IT and data center infrastructure technologies.'

Sun Microsystems will be hosting the event and Subodh Bapat, vicepresident and distinguished engineer, responsible for driving Sun's systemslevel energy strategy, will be featured as the keynote speaker.

'As an early producer of brutally efficient products -- such asmulti-threaded microprocessors that can do the work of many chips, lower powerconsumption servers and virtualization technologies -- and highly efficient, modular datacenter designs to support them, Sun is pleased to host the Summitand to participate in the great dialog that will certainly occur,' said DeanNelson, Sun's senior director of Global Lab and Datacenter Design Services(GDS).

Data Center Energy Summit 2008 has been supported by Accenture, PacificGas & Electric Company, Silicon Valley Power and Sun Microsystems. For moreinformation and to register for the Summit, please visithttp://svlg.net/events/datacenter0626/.
